# Could AI have predicted the Trump–Putin diesel deal?

> We sent Sikt back to October 5, four days before the Trump–Putin diesel deal. It mapped the exact path, then gave it 2%. Here is what it saw and missed.

**Short answer: partly.** We set Sikt Intelligence's clock back to October 5, 2026, four days before the deal, so it could only read news from before that moment. It found the mechanism: among ten possible paths, it listed Russia easing its export ban after a call and a US Treasury license for Russian diesel. But it gave the license path only 2%, because Russia's own export ban meant there was nothing to sell. The clues that the ban could be lifted were already in the news. The missing piece was the phone call itself.

## October 9: a deal almost nobody saw coming

On Friday, October 9, 2026, after a call with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump announced that Russia would supply diesel to the world: "over 300,000 tons" immediately, 500,000 tons in November and more after that, according to his post ([Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2026/10/9/trump-announces-russian-diesel-deal-amid-soaring-us-fuel-prices)). The tonnage comes from Trump; the Kremlin confirmed the call and said Russia was ready to supply oil and oil products to American and world markets, without repeating the numbers.

The same day, the Treasury's sanctions office issued General License 135, which allows the sale, delivery and import of Russian-origin diesel until April 7, 2027: about six months ([Ship & Bunker](https://shipandbunker.com/news/world/445068-us-lifts-sanctions-on-russian-diesel-for-six-months-after-trump-putin-call)). On October 10, Russia partially lifted its diesel export ban, clearing 500,000 tonnes for world markets ([Ukrainska Pravda](https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2026/10/10/8057400/)).

Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was blunt: "Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilized world" ([CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-russia-release-diesel-oil-iran-skyrocketing-costs/)). The deal drew criticism from both parties in Congress ([CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/11/politics/us-russia-diesel-deal-bipartisan-criticism)), and even the full promised volume equals less than two weeks of US diesel demand ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/13/trump-putin-zelenskyy-russia-ukraine-diesel-oil-price.html)).

So was it really out of the blue? We took Sikt back in time to find out.

## Taking Sikt back to October 5

**Sikt Past** is a time machine for forecasting. You pick a moment, and Sikt can only read the news pages we saved before it. Every page is stamped the moment it was saved, so nothing from the future can slip in. You can then ask Sikt questions as it was on that day.

We chose October 5, four days before the call. Here is what the world looked like:

- **Diesel was at a record.** The US average had hit about $6.50 a gallon in late September; AAA's national average set a record of $6.53 on September 22 ([CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-russia-release-diesel-oil-iran-skyrocketing-costs/)).
- **The midterms were four weeks away**, on November 3.
- **Ukrainian drones were hitting Russian refineries.** Russia began cutting diesel output in July after repeated strikes ([Hellenic Shipping News](https://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/russia-could-partially-open-diesel-exports-in-case-of-surplus-output-novak/)).
- **Russia had banned its own diesel exports**, with the ban for producers extended through the end of October.

The question we asked: could Trump make a diesel deal with Russia within four days?

## Ten paths, and the right one at 2%

**Sikt Scenario** does not pick a winner. It maps the ways something could happen, especially the ones the news is not talking about, puts a probability on each, and lists signs to watch. For this question it found ten paths. Three of them matter here:

| Sikt's path (October 5) | What happened by October 10 |
|---|---|
| Path 3: Russia eases its export ban and Trump takes the credit after a call with Putin | Russia partially lifted the ban the day after the call |
| Path 4: sanctions held back in exchange for diesel | Treasury eased sanctions on Russian diesel as part of the deal |
| Path 8: the US Treasury issues a license for Russian diesel | General License 135, valid until April 7, 2027 |

Four days early, the real mechanism was on the map. The actual deal was three of Sikt's paths put together.

Then Sikt forecast each path. The license path got **2%**: two in a hundred. Its reasoning was simple. Russia had banned diesel exports, so there was nothing to sell. Sikt saw a wall.

## Four clues that were already in the news

We went back to October 5 again, this time looking for clues. Four were already there:

1. **The price.** In late September, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said diesel must be able to reach world markets "without any sanctions, restrictions, and so on" ([Hellenic Shipping News](https://hellenicshippingnews.com/russia-says-sanctions-should-be-lifted-for-it-to-satisfy-international-diesel-demand)). In other words: lift the sanctions and the fuel flows.
2. **The tap.** The export ban was Russia's own choice, and it could switch it off overnight. On October 2, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Russia could partially reopen diesel exports if it had surplus output ([Hellenic Shipping News](https://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/russia-could-partially-open-diesel-exports-in-case-of-surplus-output-novak/)).
3. **The precedent.** In March, when oil prices spiked during the Iran war, the Treasury had already eased sanctions on Russian oil with a short-term license, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called a "narrowly tailored, short-term measure" ([CGTN](https://news.cgtn.com/news/2026-03-13/Oil-drops-after-US-treasury-eases-sanctions-on-Russian-oil--1LtotrARtq8/share_amp.html)).
4. **The pain.** Record diesel prices, an election weeks away and continued strikes on Russian refineries gave the White House a strong reason to act.

Each clue on its own was weak. Together, they described the trade that happened: Russia opens the tap, the US eases sanctions.

## The missing piece: the phone call

One thing was missing: a reason for Trump and Putin to talk that week. On Tuesday, October 6, Trump said he had a call scheduled with Putin to discuss a suspected plague case at a Siberian research institute ([Boston.com/AP](https://www.boston.com/news/health/2026/10/06/trump-says-he-has-call-scheduled-with-putin-to-discuss-possible-case-of-pneumonic-plague-in-russia/)).

Sikt's library only caught the full story on Friday, the day of the deal. So even at midnight before the call, Sikt still put the license path at about 3%. Then the call happened, and the deal was exactly the trade the clues pointed to.

The lesson: **the map found the mechanism, but the forecast did not believe it.** Sikt was right that the ban was the obstacle. It was wrong about how fixed that obstacle was.

## Why low-probability paths matter

A 2% forecast for something that happened is not automatically a mistake. Most dramatic deals do not happen in any given four-day window, and a good forecaster starts from that kind of [base rate](/blog/base-rates-forecasting). If Sikt gives a hundred paths 2% each, about two should happen. Only many forecasts, scored together, can tell whether its small numbers are honest; that is what [forecast calibration](/blog/forecast-calibration) measures.

But the value of a map is not only in its numbers. Each path comes with **signs to watch**. For a path like the license, natural signs would be Russia hinting it could reopen exports, the Kremlin naming sanctions as the price, and a Trump–Putin call being scheduled. By October 6, all three had appeared. A forecaster watching for them could have moved its number days before the announcement, not hours after.

That is the idea behind using the two features together:

- **Sikt Past teaches.** After a surprise, we go back to the exact moment and ask: was the answer already out there, and why did we miss it? We can replay any moment and test new ideas on past events in days, not months.
- **Sikt Scenario watches.** For a live question, it maps the paths the news is missing and the signs that would make each one more likely. When a sign shows up, the forecast can move early.

One case is not proof. A retrospective test is not a forecast, and it is easy to find clues once you know the answer. That is why we are now running the same test on many more events. ## Where Sikt Intelligence fits

Sikt Intelligence is an AI forecasting tool for real-world events: rate decisions, elections, geopolitical flashpoints and energy shocks like this one. Each forecast is a probability, shown next to the market's price where there is one, and graded when the answer arrives, misses included. Sikt Past and Sikt Scenario are new and in early testing. You can follow live forecasts on the [2026 midterms](/midterms) and the [odds pages](/odds), or [join the waitlist](/#access) for early access. Nothing here is financial or investment advice.

## Key takeaways

- On October 9, 2026, after a Trump–Putin call, the US issued a six-month license for Russian diesel and Russia partially lifted its own export ban.
- Set back to October 5, Sikt mapped the real mechanism among ten paths, but gave the license path only 2%, because Russia's export ban meant there was nothing to sell.
- Four clues were already public: the Kremlin naming sanctions as the price, a ban Russia could lift itself, the March sanctions easing, and record diesel prices before the midterms.
- The missing signal was the call, announced on October 6; Sikt's archive only caught the full story on the day of the deal.
- One case is not proof: the point is to learn which signs should move a forecast early, and to test that on many more events.

## FAQ

### What was the Trump–Putin diesel deal?

On October 9, 2026, Trump said Putin had agreed to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel immediately and more in the following months. The US Treasury issued General License 135, allowing transactions in Russian diesel until April 7, 2027, and Russia partially lifted its diesel export ban on October 10.

### Why did Russia ban diesel exports?

Ukrainian drone strikes damaged Russian refineries and cut fuel output, so Russia restricted diesel exports to protect its home market. The ban for producers had been extended through October 2026 before the deal partly lifted it.

### Why were diesel prices so high in 2026?

The war with Iran and disruption in the Gulf pushed fuel prices up, and lost Russian supply added to it. The US average diesel price set a record of about $6.50 a gallon in late September 2026.

### Can AI predict geopolitical events?

Sometimes, and rarely with certainty. AI can read far more news than a person and map many possible paths, as Sikt did here. But this case shows the limit: Sikt found the right path and still gave it a low number. The fair test is many forecasts, made before the answers were known and scored afterward.
