**Short answer:** Sikt's middle estimate is **232 Democratic House seats**, with an 80% range of 219 to 244; 218 is a majority. Kalshi's seat markets put the middle at 239 (215 to 243+), so Sikt expects 7 fewer than the market. [See the chart](/midterms/house-control#seats). Sikt's middle estimate is **51 Democratic Senate seats**, with an 80% range of 48 to 54; 51 is a majority. Kalshi's seat markets put the middle at 52 (47 to 53+), so Sikt expects 1 fewer than the market. [See the chart](/midterms/senate-control#seats).

These numbers come from the **Sikt Midterm Bench**, our public test of an AI forecaster on the 2026 midterms (round 9, from Oct 27, 2026). They update with every new round until election day, Tuesday, November 3, and they will be scored against the seat counts on February 1, 2027.

## Why seats, and not only who wins?

A chance of control says who is favored. A seat count says by how much. "A party at 90% to win the House" fits a narrow majority of 220 seats and a wave of 250 equally well, and those are very different Congresses. A seat forecast with a range commits to one picture, and it can be checked in public.

Each forecast here is a middle estimate and an **80% range**: the final count should land inside the range 8 times in 10. So about 1 time in 5 it should land outside, and that is what makes the range honest. More on this idea in [forecast calibration](/blog/forecast-calibration).

## The House: how many seats?

All 435 seats are on the ballot, and **218** is a majority. Republicans hold a narrow majority going into the election, so Democrats need only a small net gain to take control.

Sikt's middle estimate is **232 Democratic House seats**, with an 80% range of 219 to 244; 218 is a majority. Kalshi's seat markets put the middle at 239 (215 to 243+), so Sikt expects 7 fewer than the market. [See the chart](/midterms/house-control#seats).

**The national vote.** For the national House popular vote, Sikt's middle estimate is **Democrats by 8.2 points** (80% range: Democrats by 4.6 to Democrats by 11.8), against Democrats by 9.4 on Kalshi's market. The popular vote and the seat count do not move one for one. Districts are drawn differently from state to state, and Texas, California and several other states redrew their maps in 2025, so the same national vote can give a different number of seats than in past years.

**Seats and control fit together.** Sikt's latest Midterm Bench forecast, from Oct 27, 2026, gives Democrats a **90%** chance of controlling the House, against 91% to 92% on the markets. See every round on [Sikt's House forecast page](/midterms/house-control). A middle estimate well above 218 with a range that reaches toward the majority line is what a strong but not certain favorite looks like.

## The Senate: how many seats?

Only 35 of the 100 seats are up. Democrats hold 47, counting the two independents who caucus with them, and need **51** for control, because a 50-50 Senate stays Republican with Vice President JD Vance's tie-breaking vote.

**Seats and control fit together here too.** Sikt's latest Midterm Bench forecast, from Oct 27, 2026, gives Democrats a **60%** chance of controlling the Senate, against 64% to 66% on the markets. See every round on [Sikt's Senate forecast page](/midterms/senate-control). The nearer the middle estimate sits to the majority line, the closer control is to a coin flip, and the more a single race can decide it. The closest of those races are in [2026 Senate race margins](/blog/2026-senate-race-margins), with Sikt's margin for each one.

If every Sikt favorite in the 10 races won, Alaska, Maine, Texas, Ohio and North Carolina would change hands, for 52 Democratic seats and a Democratic majority, assuming the other 25 races go to the party that holds them.

## Sikt vs. the market

Kalshi lists markets on the final seat count for both chambers and on the House popular vote. Sikt shows their middle estimate next to its own on the [House forecast page](/midterms/house-control#seats) and the [Senate forecast page](/midterms/senate-control#seats). The market numbers in this article are from the start of the same Bench round, so the two are compared on the same day.

When the AI and the market differ, one of them is weighing something the other is not, such as a state's history of polls overstating one party, or how many close seats are likely to break the same way. The election will show which one read it better.

## How these forecasts will be graded

The seat counts will be scored on February 1, 2027, after the new Congress is sworn in, and the popular vote against the certified results. For each forecast we will publish how far the middle estimate was from the result and whether the result landed inside the 80% range, next to the market's numbers, misses included.

That is what Sikt Intelligence builds: an AI forecaster that researches each question like an analyst, puts a number on it, explains its reasoning and is graded in public. Follow every round on our [2026 midterms page](/midterms), or [join the waitlist](/#access) for early access.
